Hoodwinked! (alternatively styled Hoodwinked ) is a 2005 American calculator-animated musical one-act mystery motion picture. It retells the folktale Piddling Red Riding Hood as a law procedural, using backstories to evidence multiple characters' points of view. It was produced independently by Blue Yonder Films with Kanbar Entertainment, directed and written by Cory Edwards, Todd Edwards, and Tony Leech, and produced by Katie Hooten, Maurice Kanbar, David 1000. Lovegren, Sue Bea Montgomery, and Preston Stutzman. The pic was released by The Weinstein Visitor in Los Angeles, California, on Dec 16, 2005, for a one-week engagement before expanding nationwide on January thirteen, 2006. The picture show features the voices of Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, Jim Belushi, Patrick Warburton, Anthony Anderson, David Ogden Stiers, Xzibit, Chazz Palminteri and Andy Dick.

Hoodwinked! was amongst the earliest reckoner-blithe films to be completely independently funded. Working apart from a major studio allowed the filmmakers greater creative control, but also restrained them economically. Due to the film'due south low budget, its animation was produced in the Philippines, with a less realistic design inspired by stop motion films. The Weinstein Company did non sign on every bit the motion-picture show'southward distributor until well-nigh the end of production, and while the company had several roles recast with higher-profile actors, it otherwise made few changes to the picture show.

Structurally, the film was inspired by non-linear criminal offense dramas, such as Rashomon and Pulp Fiction . Information technology was released before long after the get-go two installments in the successful Shrek series, which accentuated the fairy tale parody genre of which Hoodwinked! is a office. Hoodwinked!, however, intentionally deviated from the Shrek series in its style of sense of humor and in certain plot elements. This was in part based on Cory Edwards' concerns over exposing children to the high level of cynicism frequently establish in the genre.

Disquisitional reception to the film was varied; although its script and voice performances were praised by many reviews, its blitheness quality was heavily criticized. The picture was a commercial success, earning over thirteen times its less-than-$8 million upkeep. Because of this, information technology is regarded as the near profitable animated film ever made.

A sequel, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil , directed past Mike Disa. It was created by an entirely different team, even though the original draft of the screenplay was written by the Edwards brothers and Leech. Information technology was released in 2011 to negative reviews and financial failure.

Plot [ edit ]

Little Red Riding Hood arrives at her grandmother's business firm, where the Big Bad Wolf has disguised himself as Ruby's Granny. The Wolf attacks Red. Granny, who has been tied upwards, suddenly jumps out of a nearby closet to help Ruby, just as an ax-wielding woodsman bursts through the window. The law arrive on the scene. Detective Nicky Flippers questions everyone involved about the events leading upwards to the incident.

Little Red, actually named Red Puckett, explains that she was delivering goodies for her grandmother, when she discovered a threat from the mysterious Goody Bandit, who has been stealing recipes. To save her Granny'southward business concern, Red embarked upon a journeying to take the Puckett family recipes to Granny's abode on top of a nearby mountain. En route, she fell out of a cable car operated past the bunny Boingo and encountered the Wolf, who sprung a serial of suspicious questions on her. Evading the Wolf, Red and so met an old singing caprine animal named Japeth, who accompanied her through the remaining journey to Granny'due south house. Upon arriving at her destination, Ruby plant the Wolf already waiting in ambush.

What at outset seems to be an open-and-shut case becomes confused once the Wolf shares his side of the story. The Wolf, to the surprise of many at the crime scene, is an investigative reporter. He reveals that he was searching for a pb on the identity of the Goody Bandit and had reason to believe that Red and Granny were the culprits. Along with his hyperactive squirrel assistant Twitchy, the Wolf confronted Cherry-red in the hopes of solving the Goody Bandit mystery. When they failed to detain Red for long, the Wolf and Twitchy made haste for Granny's house. They managed to arrive ahead of Red (past using a shortcut known by Boingo). At the house, they found Granny already tied upwardly in the closet. The Wolf so went surreptitious, planning to play a trick on Red into sharing the truth about the Goody Bandit.

When the Woodsman, named Kirk, is questioned, he explains that his advent at Granny'due south firm was pure happenstance. Kirk is in fact an aspiring thespian who was just trying out for the part of a woodsman in a commercial. After his schnitzel truck was robbed by the Goody Bandit, he was consoled past Boingo and then received a callback for the commercial. He spent the rest of the mean solar day chopping trees, getting into character for his upcoming role. At sunset, a big tree collapsed and pushed him through the window of Granny's home.

The investigation then turns to Granny. Unbeknownst to her granddaughter, Granny is an farthermost sports enthusiast. Earlier that solar day, she competed in a ski race, where Boingo was in attendance, supposedly every bit a fan of Granny'due south. Once the race started, Granny was attacked by the opposing team. Able to withstand the attack and win the race, she learned that the team had been hired by the Goody Bandit to eliminate her. Granny explains to the investigators and her fellow suspects that while parachuting back domicile, she got tangled upwardly in the parachute strings, which snagged on her ceiling fan and threw her into the closet.

Feeling betrayed by Granny's secrecy, Red wanders off lone. Flippers deduces that Boingo, who had been nowadays in all four stories, must be the Goody Bandit. Later Boingo sneaks into Granny's domicile and steals the Puckett family recipes, Cherry notices Boingo and follows him to his hideout at a cable car station. The law pursue Boingo in the wrong direction. Granny, the Wolf, and Kirk manage to locate Boingo as he is explaining his evil scheme to Red. Boingo plans to add together an addictive substance chosen "Boingonium" to the stolen recipes and and so bulldoze the forest, so equally to clear the way for a new Boingo-themed corporate empire.

The Wolf and Kirk become underground to distract Boingo, as Granny sneaks into Boingo's lair, but they are all soon establish out and open disharmonize ensues. Boingo sends a spring and gagged Red downward the mountain in a cable automobile loaded with explosives. Granny goes after Crimson, with Boingo and his henchmen in pursuit. Red manages to free herself, and escapes with Granny, while the police, who take been redirected by Twitchy, are waiting at the bottom of the mountain to arrest Boingo and his henchmen.

Quondam afterwards, Kirk finds success in a yodeling troupe, while Red, Granny, the Wolf, and Twitchy are enlisted by Flippers to bring together a crime-solving organisation called the Happily Ever After Agency.

... I realize that there were other independently funded projects being done at the same time, only ... we were the first ... the commencement kind of a new model and a new way of making an animated film. Information technology was made with no studio money, overseas, and then picked upwards by a major distributor. A few other animated films have followed this path, but not to the level of success that Hoodwinked was able to reach. I know Veggie Tales had a flick come out earlier that year, simply that was with a struck deal and brand recognition. Hoodwinked was this freak of nature that was made completely exterior of the studio arrangement and, thankfully, worked.

—Cory Edwards, director of Hoodwinked! [2] [3]

Hoodwinked! was one of the first independent computer-animated films to exist produced without the aid of a distributor. Although the film'south budget is listed as $xxx million on Box Part Mojo, [v] several sources take rejected this effigy, reporting that the picture show was produced for no more than $15 million. [6] [7] [8] [9] Manager Cory Edwards explained in a 2009 interview that the moving picture's actual upkeep was nether $eight 1000000. [2] [iii] Any of these figures would be significantly lower than is typical for a computer-animated film's budget. [10] At the time of Hoodwinked! 's production, the costs of computer-blitheness software had merely recently decreased to a price that was attainable to more than just major studios, and leading upwardly to the motion picture'southward release, producer David Lovegren said, "Six or seven years ago, the idea of doing Hoodwinked! equally an independent [blithe] feature would accept been impossible". [11]

The filmmakers only made the film independently by necessity, [12] and Cory Edwards has said, "It's non a model to exist followed. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, seat-of-your-pants kind of thing that simply barely came off." [13] However, he added that the process was worth going through to get the film made, and encouraged aspiring filmmakers to be willing to follow it. [13]

Development [ edit ]

The film's production was privately financed by entrepreneur Maurice Kanbar.

After a number of years spent producing commercials and music videos in Tulsa, brothers Cory and Todd Edwards founded their own production company, Blue Yonder Films. Joined by their friends producers Brad Knull, Robert Yanovitch and Preston Stutzman, who also led marketing for the company. The group released their get-go characteristic film, Chillicothe, at the 1999 Sundance Motion picture Festival. Emboldened past this success, the company then moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of producing a sophomore film. Blue Yonder evolved as Knull and Yanovitch left to pursue other interests, and new opportunities for the remaining 3 partners proved elusive at first. [14] An associate producer on Chillicothe, Sue Bea Montgomery, sought out studios that might want to work with the trio; she was met with indifference and determined that Bluish Yonder Films would have to farther establish itself on the independent scene before anyone would have interest. Montgomery then set a meeting between the filmmakers and Maurice Kanbar, a successful entrepreneur who had made a small investment in Chillicothe. [nine] [15]

The Edwards brothers pitched a number of ideas for alive-action films to Kanbar and proposed a development deal that would have entailed Kanbar paying the grouping and covering their rent in exchange for a pregnant portion of the rights to any scripts that Blue Yonder Films e'er sold. Kanbar, however, was interested in a more directly approach, preferring to focus efforts on getting a single motion picture produced. He had always admired animation, and after seeing a direct-to-DVD computer-animated short film that Cory had made called Wobots, suggested the possibility of producing an animated characteristic with Blue Yonder Films, one that would tell a familiar narrative with a twist. Kanbar gave the grouping a month to come upward with a story idea. [15]

Although Kanbar expressed interest in producing a retelling of Cinderella or Pinocchio , the Edwards brothers insisted on avoiding stories that had already been defined by Disney. [xv] Several ideas were considered by the brothers. Cory suggested Footling Red Riding Hood , describing information technology equally a story "so simple that you can go a lot of different directions with it", [16] and within a few days, inspiration came to Todd through not-linear offense dramas, such as Rashomon , Pulp Fiction , Run Lola Run and Memento . Todd'southward proposal to retell Little Scarlet Riding Hood as a police investigation, exploring the narrative through multiple points of view, was embraced by Kanbar, who agreed to fully finance the film before seeing a finished script. [4] [9] Kanbar's initial program was to release the motion-picture show direct to DVD. [10] In 2002, Kanbar and Montgomery joined together in founding Kanbar Entertainment and Kanbar Animation, contained production studios that teamed with Blue Yonder Films for the production of Hoodwinked! [17] [18] [19]

Cory served as the film's master director, equally he had more feel with animation, comedy, and children's entertainment, while Todd served as co-director. Montgomery and Stutzman were joined past Disney animation veteran David Lovegren as producers on the moving-picture show, [xi] and Cory's and Todd'due south sister Katie Hooten joined as an associate producer. [14] Tony Leech, who had worked with the Edwards brothers on Chillicothe, was initially hired as an editor, but gained story input as well. [15] He eventually proved to be then valuable to the product that he was given a role equally co-managing director. [11]

Pre-production [ edit ]

A drawing of Little Red Riding Hood standing next to the Wolf

Hoodwinked! is a parody of the European fairy tale Niggling Red Riding Hood.

The filmmakers found independently producing the film to have both benefits and challenges. Although they were given a slap-up amount of creative control by their executive producer Maurice Kanbar, [eleven] their small upkeep kept them from making potentially beneficial changes to the story one time production was underway. Todd Edwards related that "Money doesn't just buy you more talent and more than machinery, it also buys you flexibility on a story level. At Disney, if they don't like the third act, they just throw the whole affair out and re-animate the whole thing, even if information technology'south finished ... Nosotros had no such luxury, and then in a way, you're watching our first version of the pic." [xx] Knowing ahead of time their inability to alter the moving-picture show's script once animating had begun, an effort was fabricated by the filmmakers to finalize the script as much as possible before the starting time of production, which is non a common exercise for studio-produced animated films. [xx]

Turning abroad from the well-known archetypes of the Niggling Reddish Riding Hood characters, the filmmakers continued to look towards non-linear crime dramas for inspiration instead. Producer Preston Stutzman explained that "The whole film is well-nigh surprises and secret lives". [21] Not wanting Red to be "boring" or "besides innocent", she was patterned on James Dean and given the desire of leaving habitation to find her mode in the world. Todd Edwards had the idea of basing the Wolf on Chevy Hunt'south graphic symbol in Fletch , feeling that information technology would be fun to apply the character'due south dry, deadpan style of sense of humor to an animated wolf, while Cory Edwards created the hyperactive character of Twitchy to serve equally the Wolf'due south foil. Going against types, Red's Granny was written as a thrill-seeking activity hero, while the strong Woodsman was written as being childishly incompetent. [21]

The police officers were written to come across as everyday guys and Cory Edwards has explained that the conclusion to make three of them pigs was not politically motivated. Nicky Flippers was not a role of the story as it was initially conceived and prior to his cosmos, the investigation was going to be led by Chief Grizzly. After producer Sue Bea Montgomery and her husband pointed out similarities between their film and the 1950s film/TV series The Thin Homo , the Edwards brothers and Leech decided to introduce the grapheme and his dog into the pic as an homage to Nick Charles. [23] They considered several different types of animals earlier settling on making him a frog. [eighteen]

A photograph of Cory Edwards

Director and co-writer Cory Edwards besides co-wrote two of the moving-picture show's songs, performed one of them, and voiced the character Twitchy.

Cory Edwards chose to approach the picture show predominantly as an action/one-act, instead of as a typical animated picture, and wrote the script to entreatment to audiences of whatever age like many of the films produced by Pixar or Disney. [24] Bugs Bunny , Road Runner , Rocky and Bullwinkle , The Muppets , The Simpsons and The Incredibles have all been cited equally inspirations for the movie. An attempt was made to altitude the film from Shrek and other similar themed films that had been recently released, by excluding magic, wizards, and fairies from the film. [sixteen] [25] Cory Edwards also strived for a different style of humor than Shrek, choosing to make his film more than family friendly and less of a satire. [26]

Working out of Todd and Preston'southward apartment, Cory and Todd Edwards initially wrote the script while Cory sketched almost of the picture show's storyboards, and Todd wrote the songs. Leech simultaneously scanned the boards edited the story reel on his Mac computer. [2] [3] The first (temp) vox cast was the three of them. Producer Sue Bea Montgomery showed test screenings of the story reel to children in her neighborhood, and gained input from their reactions. The filmmakers had been considering removing Japeth the caprine animal, but chose non to when he proved one of the near popular characters at these screenings. The children as well particularly liked Twitchy, which led to the expansion of the grapheme's part. [27]

In an endeavor to save costs, the pic'southward bandage was originally going to be composed mostly of friends and family unit members of the filmmakers. [x] [28] Cory and Todd brought in their cousin Tye Edwards to play Dolph and turned to their friend Joshua J. Greene to play Jimmy Lizard. [28] [29] Japeth was written specifically for Benjy Gaither, the son of gospel music singers Bill and Gloria Gaither. He had been a friend of the Edwards brothers since childhood and Cory's curt picture Wobots had been produced through his animation studio Alive Bait Productions. [15] [30] Cory'south wife Vicki was given the function of a skunk reporter, and while some consideration was initially given to having an developed play the child woodpecker Quill, the role was instead given to producer David K. Lovegren'due south daughter Kathryn. The Edwards brothers, Leech, and producer Preston Stutzman all took on roles too. [28] Wanting to do one of the voices in his picture show and having watching a lot of squirrels, [16] Cory took on the role of Twitchy, and Pro Tools was used to speed up the recording of his dialogue by l pct. [32] Todd played the local Sandwich Human being, Leech played both Det. Neb Stork and Glen, and Stutzman played Timmy. [33]

As the producers gained greater confidence in the film, even so, larger name actors were brought in. [10] Patrick Warburton was the offset celebrity role player to join the film and did so purely out of a love for the script. Though Cory Edwards had originally envisioned the Wolf as sounding like a mixture betwixt a immature Chevy Hunt and Bill Murray, he praised Warburton's functioning, saying that he "made the Wolf his own grapheme." [21] Warburton, who had past experience in vocalization interim from Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and The Emperor's New Groove , constitute funny Edwards' idea to phonation the Wolf as an investigative reporter who fancied himself like Chevy Hunt'south Fletch character, then he decided to vox the Wolf dryly and inquisitively. [34] Andy Dick likewise joined the cast early on, to vocalism Boingo. He used improvisation and approached the role differently from how it had been written, interpreting the graphic symbol as victimized and unstable. The filmmakers were enthusiastic over Dick'southward angle on the character, and Todd Edwards said, "What we had written was kind of stock, to be honest, but Andy Dick, well, where he was supposed to laugh, he'd be crying. Where he was supposed to yell, he'd be laughing. He only mixed it up!" [21] Prolific voice performers Tara Strong, David Ogden Stiers and Tom Kenny were bandage in multiple roles. Strong was cast as Red and Zorra, Stiers was cast as Kirk, the Woodsman and Nicky Flippers, and Kenny was cast as Tommy and Woolworth the Sheep. [33] Emmy-winning actress Sally Struthers was brought in to play Granny Puckett and Joel McCrary was bandage every bit Main Grizzly. [33] [29]

Animation [ edit ]

I'll be real honest, there are many, many shots that I wince at when I see them, because it's not my standard of excellence. I know they could be better, but there comes a time at the end of the day where we just had to give upward on some things. So to hear critics and people on the internet, like, ranting about it, we all want to yell dorsum and go, "We know! Nosotros know it's bad! But this is what we could exercise!" And the fact that the film is successful in spite of that is really cool, considering it basically says to the manufacture, not to go along to make poorly blithe films, but to say, "Look at what the story and the mannerly characters did; they were able to surpass the bad animation and the technical bug."

—Cory Edwards, director of Hoodwinked!, on the quality of the film's animation. [15]

The film'due south blitheness was created on Maya software, and in an effort to save costs, was produced in Manila, Philippines. [11] [35] Producers Sue Bea Montgomery and David K. Lovegren founded the animation studio Digital Eye Candy for the purpose of the film's production [36] and stationed it in a 5,000-square-foot rented house. Cory Edwards traveled to this studio a total of fifteen times over the course of the film's three-year production and has explained that although the house was located in an expensive part of Manila, the rent was no more than that of his two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles. [four] When Cory was non able to be on site, Todd took over directing duties. "Along with Tony, nosotros were kind of a 'three-headed monster,'" Cory explains. "We all knew what movie we were making, and I trusted those guys to make creative calls when I couldn't exist there." Lovegren had attempted to offset an contained animation studio in the Philippines before in 2001, but the studio, called ImagineAsia, was airtight after it failed to attract business concern. Digital Center Candy hired approximately twenty animators that had previously been employed past ImagineAsia, [11] [37] and at i signal the studio reached l employees. [four]

The picture's animators had petty experience with computer-animation and feature-length films, and had to exist trained past the producers over the grade of the pic's production. [12] Since none of the animators were specialists, they were non divided into specific teams, but instead each worked on all areas of the animating process. The filmmakers found this to exist a poor method though, considering information technology kept the individual skills of the animators from being optimized. Due to their contained backgrounds, the animators were accepted to working at fast paces, and despite their small numbers, each phase of production was able to exist completed within a short period of time. [13] Still, schedule and upkeep restraints led the filmmakers to enlist Prana Studios in Mumbai, Republic of india to perform lighting and compositing. [36]

The filmmakers institute that the most hard aspect of producing the film independently was their inability to set all of the mistakes made in the film'southward blitheness. [10] [twenty] Todd Edwards explained that "it becomes an equation: 'I have 10 things that I would similar to change in this shot. I have the time and the budget to do iii. Pick those iii and so allow's move on.' And that was difficult to practice". [20] Some other obstacle during the picture show's product, according to Cory Edwards, was putting fur on the animal characters. Information technology took the filmmakers 3 and a half years to crack the lawmaking to do and so perfectly, forcing themselves to redesign and reanimate several aspects. [23]

Knowing that they could not friction match the quality of other computer-animated films, the film was instead designed to imitate the look of stop motion. Cory Edwards cited Rankin-Bass every bit an inspiration and explained, "If we approach our wait like that—photographed miniatures in stop motion—and if that nostalgia resonates with our audience equally far equally that wait, so we're not going to shoot ourselves in the foot trying to put every freckle and hair on photoreal creatures." [11] Edwards contrasted the technically innovative, but critically panned 1986 movie Howard the Duck with the elementary, merely dearest puppet character Kermit the Frog to illustrate to his coiffure the importance of well-written, likeable characters over technical quality. [15]

Distancing the film from what producer Preston Stutzman called the "candy-coated, brightly colored pastel world[s]" of other CG blithe films, an attempt was made to bring an organic expect to the moving picture, and "dirt" was rubbed into the colors. [21] The Nightmare Before Christmas was cited as an inspiration for the filmmakers to try to bend the characters' shapes into extremes, and many other choices unconventional to computer-animated films were also made. For instance, i of the Woodsman's optics was made bigger than the other, and Ruby-red was given only iv fingers, then as to make her look more like a doll. Producer Katie Hooten explained that "CG in the past has been pushing the envelope to make things look more realistic, but Hoodwinked takes things back to where CG looks a lot more than similar a cartoon." [thirteen]

Music [ edit ]

The film'south score was equanimous past John Mark Painter, who forth with his wife Fleming McWilliams, constituted the rock duo Fleming and John in the 1990s. The Edwards brothers were fans of the group and beginning met Painter while Cory was performing in an animated film on which Painter served as the composer. [15] The score was inspired by music from the 1960s and the soundtracks to Planet of the Apes , Night Shadows , and The Untouchables have been cited as influences, also as the works of Henry Mancini. It was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, where Kristin Wilkinson served as the orchestrator and conductor. [xl]

In an effort to entreatment to older audience members, Todd Edwards chose to supersede parts of Painter'due south score with original stone music. From this came the song "Little Boat", written and sung by Daniel Rogers, who had composed Edwards' first picture Chillicothe. [25] "Runaway" was written by Joshua J. Greene, a friend of the Edwards brothers', who also provided the voice of Jimmy Cadger in the film. [29] "The Existent One thousand", sung by Cory Edwards and "Bounce", sung by Todd Collins were both written by Painter and Cory Edwards. "Blow Your Firm Down" was performed by the Filipino band Pupil and written by their pb vocalist Ely Buendia.

Cory Edwards was willing to include the Foo Fighters' vocal "All My Life". The Foo Fighters decided against it due to having a new album coming out and having no enthusiasm virtually using their onetime striking, afraid information technology was getting overused. No Foo Fighters song was included on the soundtrack. [23]

Todd Edwards wrote nine original songs for the film and sung four of them: "Critters Have Feelings", "Tree Critter", "Eva Deanna", and "Glow". "Eva Deanna" was written about a day that he and his wife spent at the zoo with their niece, the daughter of associate producer Katie Hooten. "Glow" was written most the Edwards siblings' grandmother, Vera, who had died a few years earlier. [44] "Dandy Big World" was sung by Anne Hathaway and replaced another song called "Woods Go-Round", which Edwards considered as well childish and described as being "in the vein of Sat morning time cartoons." This change required the scene to be re-animated and re-cut. [25] "Be Prepared" was sung by Benjy Gaither and developed out of a practicality; the filmmakers wanted to innovate Japeth while the character is rocking back and forth on his horns, as though the horns are a rocking chair. All the same, they realized that this would brand the horns too large to fit in a minecart afterward on in the moving-picture show. Every bit a solution, they came upwardly with the gag of having the character switch his horns several times, and this led to the song's concept. McWilliams joined Jim Belushi to sing "The Schnitzel Song" and Painter asked his longtime friend Ben Folds to sing "Red is Blue", a selection strongly advocated for by Edwards. Folds was working on a new album at the time, but a twelvemonth subsequently the proposal, constitute the opportunity to record the song and compose a piano arrangement for information technology as well. "Peak of the Woods" was sung by Andy Dick and was originally composed to be slow-paced. The recording of Dick's performance was sped up though at the suggestion of Ralf Palmer, a prolific animator and friend of producer Sue Bea Montgomery.

Distribution [ edit ]

Sally Struthers was the original Granny for ii years of the projection. She did a fantastic voice. When Glenn Shut walked in, she said, 'Why do you lot need me? Sally did a great job.' I didn't want to say 'because Harvey made united states of america.' I'm friends with Emerge through some other people – I ended upwardly writing her a nice notation ... Emerge did more than of a southern, battleaxe granny, Glenn'southward was more a prim and proper one.

—Cory Edwards, director of Hoodwinked!, on the recasting of Sally Struthers. [29]

Hoodwinked! was shown to potential distributors throughout various stages of its production. Though a distribution offering was made by DreamWorks, it was turned down as the filmmakers did non feel that it was a good deal. [48] Equally the film neared the end of production, it was screened at the Cannes Motion picture Festival. Harvey and Bob Weinstein were also at the festival at the time, screening Robert Rodriguez's film Sin Metropolis , which they were distributing through their so newly formed studio, The Weinstein Company. They decided to option Hoodwinked! up for distribution later on it was brought to their attention past Rodriguez's wife, whose chaser also happened to piece of work for Blue Yonder Films. [17] [48] [nineteen] [49] Although Cory Edwards did not meet Rodriguez, he acknowledged him as instrumental to get the motion picture made. [23]

The Weinsteins had recently left the Walt Disney Visitor and according to Cory Edwards, they "loved the idea of picking up an blithe moving picture and giving Disney a run for their money". [48] The involvement of the Weinstein Company encouraged Kanbar enough to enlist Skywalker Sound. [ii] [3] The film was almost complete past the time that the Weinsteins became involved, and Edwards has stated that zilch was washed by them to ruin "the original vision of the movie." However, a few edit suggestions were fabricated to quicken the moving-picture show's stride which Edwards felt were proficient ideas, equally he considered the beginning xx minutes to be dragging. [19]

The Weinstein Company also heavily recast the film with bigger-name actors in the hopes of attracting a larger audience. Anne Hathaway replaced Tara Strong in the lead role of Red; Jim Belushi replaced David Ogden Stiers in the role of Kirk, the Woodsman; Anthony Anderson replaced Tony Leech in the role of Det. Bill Stork; Glenn Close replaced Sally Struthers in the function of Granny Puckett; Xzibit replaced Joel McCrary in the role of Chief Grizzly and Chazz Palminteri replaced Tom Kenny in the role of Woolworth the Sheep. [33] Opining that the final steps in graphic symbol blueprint were really fleshed out when the actors were hired, Hooten felt that Hathaway put some edge that was missing on Scarlet, making her more than sarcastic, sassy and quick. [21] Anderson accepted the role of Bill Stork given his by feel every bit voice histrion and his previous collaborations with the Weinsteins in Scary Movie 3 and My Baby's Daddy , wanting to do something that his children and godchildren could scout and enjoy. [50] Palminteri was called to be offered the part of Woolworth the Sheep, which he accepted as institute the script hilarious. [51] Despite these recastings, Tara Stiff retained the much smaller function of Zorra, David Ogden Stiers retained the part of Nicky Flippers, Tom Kenny retained the function of Tommy and Tony Leech retained the role of Glen. Many high-profile land singers were considered to replace Benjy Gaither in the role of Japeth, but none of them were available and Gaither retained the role. The Weinsteins too wanted to replace Joshua J. Greene in the role of Jimmy Lizard with a more famous player such every bit Albert Brooks, but the role was ultimately not recast. Edwards appreciated the reason for the recastings and attributed a large part of the film'due south financial success to them. He expressed thwarting well-nigh the amount of recasting, however, proverb, "At a certain point it became Recast-o-Rama, everybody got recast-happy. My feeling is, you get two or three names on that poster, y'all're fine. Our Hoodwinked poster has similar a paragraph of names on it. After a certain indicate, I don't think you need more than two, three celebrities—give it to the vocalisation actors. It sweetens the pot". [29] Since the film's animation had already been mostly completed past the time the recastings were made, the new actors had to evangelize their lines exactly equally the old actors had done, giving them no opportunity to improvise. Edwards expressed disappointment with the fact that the original actors would not get any credit for their improvisations in the film, which were copied past the replacement actors. [29]

Critical reception [ edit ]

Hoodwinked! received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 46%, based on 125 reviews. The site's consensus reads, "This fractured fairytale doesn't take the wit or animation quality to compete with the likes of the Shrek franchise." [60] On Metacritic, information technology received a score of 45 out of 100, based on 29 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". [61] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average form of "B+" on an A+ to F scale. [62]

James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave the picture two-and-a-half stars out of iv, and claimed that many of the picture'south ideas for altering its familiar storyline "audio better on paper than they turn out in execution." Finding it tedious to view the picture show's story told multiple times, he wrote that the film "slips into boredom." [63] Bruce Westbrook of the Houston Relate too gave the film two-and-a-half stars, and although he praised its "snappy dialogue and fresh characterizations", he considered the motion-picture show's plot underdeveloped and characters lacking in motivation. [64] Peter Rainer writing for The Christian Scientific discipline Monitor gave the film a C+ and called it "a moderately enjoyable escapade that isn't quite clever plenty for adults and non quite imaginative plenty for children." [65] He was non overly critical of the film, but felt that it was a disappointment in comparison to the high standards for figurer-blithe films fix by Pixar. [65] Jami Bernard of the New York Daily News suggested that timelessness is a necessary component of an animated classic, and faulted the film for its endeavor to be hip and current. [66] While Ty Burr of The Boston Globe praised the motion picture's vocal performances, he wrote, "Hoodwinked never builds to a level of sustained comic mania ... Ane aches to think what the swell Looney Tunes directors could have done with this material." [67]

Several critics, notwithstanding, were more enthusiastic most the film. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave Hoodwinked! an A- and praised the zaniness of its humour. Calling the filmmakers heroes, he compared them to Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh due to their potential for bringing contained filmmaking to prominence in animation. [6] Although Nancy Churnin of the Dallas Morn News considered the film junior to those of Pixar and DreamWorks, she still gave it a B and wrote, "it's got an upstart charm, a clever premise, highly-seasoned characters voiced by a terrific bandage and a script that should make yous laugh out loud more than than in one case." [68] In his review for the Chicago Tribune , Michael Wilmington praised the picture'south vocalism cast, music, and script, and wrote, "it packs more verbal wit and surprise than the usual cartoon." [69] Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times gave information technology three-and-a-half stars out of v calling it "high-energy, imaginative entertainment". [55]

Japeth was praised amongst both positive and negative reviews. Gleiberman and Churnin both felt that the graphic symbol was one of the best parts of the film, [6] [68] and Westbrook and Wilmington both described him as "a hoot". In a more often than not positive review for the Orlando Sentinel , Roger Moore chosen the graphic symbol hilarious, [70] while in a mostly negative review for Variety , Justin Chang wrote that the character "steals the show every minute he'south onscreen." [1]

Ane of the principal criticisms of the motion-picture show was the poor quality of its animation. Berardinelli called it some of the worst CGI animation in memory. He felt that the characters looked plastic, considered the backgrounds dull, and wrote, "On more one occasion, I thought I was watching something made for TV. When compared to today'due south visual standards for blithe films, Hoodwinked is far beneath the curve." [63] Burr considered the motion picture's surfaces poorly rendered and compared them to "Teletubbieland reupholstered with Naugahyde." [67] Westbrook felt that the blitheness worked well for the brute characters, only wrote, "the humans have a glassy sheen and brittle hardness, much similar work done in the early on days of CG ... That fine art has come too far to comprehend a throwback like Hoodwinked as lovably quaint. Information technology's simply dated." [64] Stephen Hunter of The Washington Post compared the characters to safety toys, and wrote, "their faces are without nuance or vividness ... In movement, specially, do they lack grace and conviction. It seems similar the recent breakthroughs in computerized magic take bypassed the poor Edwards fellows, as information technology looks stuck somewhere in the 1970s, or maybe fifty-fifty before." [71]

Many reviews negatively compared the film to the Shrek series. Liam Lacey of The Globe and Postal service considered the flick to exist "a sort of disbelieve Shrek", [72] while Burr chosen it "Shrek with added drek." [67] Westbrook wrote that "Echoing such a popular predecessor every bit Shrek is not a proficient matter—peculiarly when the echo is so faint." [64] Berardinelli felt that the fairy tale references were not as smartly done equally in the start Shrek film, [63] while Bernard felt that Hoodwinked! took fairy tale revisionism also far. He felt that the humor in Shrek worked due to the fairy tale characters remaining in character throughout the film, and wrote, "It's pointless to scold them for behaving the way fairy tales intended, and that'south far funnier than turning them into breakdancing anachronisms." [66] Bill Muller of The Arizona Republic considered Ruby's kung fu abilities to be overly similar to Princess Fiona'southward " Matrix agility." [73] Gleiberman also noted the similarities between the film and Shrek, merely he was positive in the comparison, feeling that its independent production gave the filmmakers "the freedom to follow their flakiest corkscrew whims." [6] While Wilmington did not find Hoodwinked! as impressive or beguiling as Shrek, he wrote that "when it's cooking, it does make you laugh." [69]

Retrospectively, several critics noted that the motion-picture show was considerably better than the 2007 estimator-animated fairy tale parody flick Happily N'Ever Subsequently . Although Burr had given Hoodwinked! a negative review, he likened the film to Citizen Kane in comparing to Happily N'Ever After. [74] Wilmington besides considered Hoodwinked! the superior of the two films, [75] and Lou Lumenick of the New York Post felt that the motion picture was far wittier than Happily Northward'Ever After. [76] While Christy Lemire of Associated Printing likened Hoodwinked! to a poor man's Shrek, she went on to call Happily N'Ever Later a poor man'due south Hoodwinked! [77]

In 2022, Richard Brody of The New Yorker called Hoodwinked! one of the elevation contained films for families. Acknowledging the crudeness of the blitheness, he nonetheless praised the writing as "assuming and funny" and wrote that the direction "displays admirable comic timing." [78] Brody considered the character personalities distinct from those in other animated comedies. He also commended the vocal performances for having a "zippy, brash energy that doesn't feel cavalier". [78] Hoodwinked! has also been praised past Tony Bancroft, who co-directed Mulan . [79]

Hoodwinked! received a Saturn Honor nomination for Best Animated Film at the Academy of Scientific discipline Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, [lxxx] merely lost to Corpse Helpmate . [81] Entertainment Weekly ranked the flick as number ten on "The Must List" for its January 27, 2006 issue, calling it a "genre-busting indie animated precious stone." [82]

Assay [ edit ]

In Feb 2006, author Timothy Sexton wrote an commodity titled "Hoodwinked: A Postmodern Examination of the Dangers of Runaway Capitalism" for Associated Content , in which he posited that Hoodwinked! was i of the first postmodern animated films and that the film also carried political undertones. He argued that the relative nature of truth was shown past revealing deviations from the original fairy tale equally the film explored the story from each of the central characters' points of view. Calling Hoodwinked! "the most subversive movie released nationwide since Fahrenheit 9/11 ", [83] Sexton went on to translate the pic equally a critique on the complimentary enterprise system. He drew comparisons betwixt the film'due south villain and the typical American business possessor, going so far equally to say that the character was "clearly based on people similar Bill Gates and Sam Walton". [83] In Sexton's view, the moving picture exposed the flaws of capitalism, showing that if left unregulated, business owners will found monopolies and eliminate competition. [83]

The motion picture's director and co-writer Cory Edwards was surprised by Sexton's estimation and denied that the film intentionally carried any political messages. He explained that he and the other filmmakers were merely drawing from the evil schemes common of James Bond films, Bugs Bunny cartoons, and The A-Squad , and wrote "If Mr. Sexton sees my movie every bit a sermon against mega-corporations monopolizing America, that's fine. But our villain is just every bit easily the face of every dictator in history, or every schoolyard swell who is compensating for depression self-esteem, or whatsoever Mafia dominate who dominates by either arresting or wiping out his contest. Hey, if y'all look at an abstract painting and run into the devil in a red splotch, that'due south your prerogative ... I guess a motion-picture show's message is just partially supplied by the filmmaker." [84]

In May 2007 Time magazine ran an article by James Poniewozik titled "Is Shrek Bad for Kids?" which considered the negative effects on children of being raised with fairy tale satires, instead of the original stories. Poniewozik mentioned Hoodwinked! writing, "I thought Hoodwinked! and most of the Shrek serial were hilarious ... Simply even if you ultimately decline their messages, old-school fairy tales are part of our cultural vocabulary. There's something a little sorry virtually kids growing up in a civilization where their fairy tales come pre-satirized, the skepticism, critique and revision having been done for them past the mama birds of Hollywood." [85] Cory Edwards wrote into the magazine, expressing his similar sentiments and writing, "As the author-managing director of Hoodwinked, information technology may surprise yous that I couldn't agree more with James Poniewozik'southward article. Even as I was making the film, I asked myself the same question: Are we parodying something that kids should have the chance to experience beginning, 'un-parodied?' We went to great lengths to distance our film from Shrek 's sense of humor (and no, I don't recollect Shrek considers kids). I would hope that Hoodwinked and its sequels will be seen as trying to do something genuine with its characters, rather than look for the adjacent joke at the expense of innocence. We ALL need the real folklore of fairytales, whether nosotros admit it or not." [26]

Sequel [ edit ]

A sequel, Hoodwinked Likewise! Hood vs. Evil, was released on April 29, 2011. It was outset announced in January 2006 [86] and in February, Cory Edwards, Todd Edwards, and Tony Leech explained that although they would be writing the screenplay, they would not return to direct. [25] Cory Edwards later elaborated on this decision, explaining that he had a negative feel working with some of the offset film's "key players" and felt that he had been poorly treated past them. [87] He too cited concerns over being bars to animation, and stated that he felt it would exist a lateral move to direct a sequel to his beginning film every bit his 2d pic. [87] In March 2007, Edwards announced that Mike Disa had been hired to direct the sequel and expressed enthusiasm over his involvement, saying that he "has a real passion for the film and a devotion to maintaining the Hoodwinked world. He wants to do the sequel justice and he really gets what we're trying to practise." [88] Although much of the outset movie's cast returned for the sequel, Anne Hathaway was replaced by Hayden Panettiere in the role of Ruby-red and Jim Belushi was replaced by Martin Short in the office of Kirk the Woodsman. [89]

Kanbar Entertainment initially intended to finance production of the sequel independently as it had done with the offset pic, just entered into a co-financing understanding proposed by The Weinstein Company. [90] The moving-picture show was initially scheduled to exist released on Jan 15, 2010, just in December 2009, The Weinstein Company postponed the film'south release date indefinitely. [91] In April 2010, Kanbar Entertainment brought a lawsuit against The Weinstein Company. In addition to claiming that the postponement of the movie's release appointment breached an agreement between the 2 companies, the lawsuit accused the Weinstein Company of not contributing to monthly product accounts subsequently Feb 2009, neglecting to consult Kanbar Amusement of a release strategy, and not responding to proposed changes to the pic, even though Kanbar Entertainment held "last authority on production decisions". [90]

The film was a fiscal failure, earning $23.1 1000000 worldwide; less than its budget. [92] [93] Critical reception to the motion-picture show was most universally negative, with a Rotten score of 11% across 61 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes [94] and a score of xx/100 on Metacritic. [95] Cory Edwards expressed disappointment with the finished pic, indicating that it was heavily altered from the original script and saying that it was "deflating to give this thing away and lookout others run with it in ways I would not."
